Summer Saturday: Architecture of Tudor Place

Discover the story of the earliest buildings on the grounds of what became Tudor Place.

Jul 12, 2025. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The earliest buildings on the land that became Tudor Place date to 1795, but how have they changed since then? What can this Federal style house tell us about the people who lived and worked (both enslaved labor and paid servants) here? Explore these questions and more during this Summer Saturday program. Upon Martha and Thomas Peter purchasing the land in 1805, friend Dr. William Thornton got to work drawing up what is referred to as the Center Block of the house. Thornton’s architectural experience included designing the first US Capitol Building. He would go on to lead the Patent Office and design other structures in the DC area.

This program will include a look at his architecture designs as well as records from the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), activities for all ages and guided architecture- themed tours of the site.
