Picnic Theater Presents: Heaven Can Wait

Bring a picnic and enjoy live theater on the sprawling South Lawn.

Now - Jun 06, 2025. 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Enjoy an evening on the South Lawn of Tudor Place as local sensation Picnic Theatre Company will be back for another summer performance!  A Washington Post investigative reporter, on the cusp of winning the coveted Pulitzer Prize for journalism, is accidentally taken away from his body by an overanxious angel before he was meant to die. The reporter returns to life in the body of a recently murdered millionaire. How will the reporter adjust to his predicament, avoid his treacherous adversaries, and find his way back to his life and vocation?

Join us as The Picnic Theatre Company presents a loving parody of the classic Heaven Can Wait – a story so beloved that the original 1940s movie has been remade twice as the iconic, Warren Beatty version from the 1970s, and again by comedian Chris Rock in the 2000s.  This story takes place in Washington DC, present day.

Guests are encouraged to bring water. Be sure to remove all trash. Trash receptacles are not provided. Bring mats, blankets or a camp chair. Due to the historic landscape, games, chairs with legs, blow up furniture, red wine etc. are not permitted.

Grounds open at 5:30 p.m.  The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. (90 minutes, no intermission).

Since its founding in 2010, the Picnic Theatre Company’s brand of site-specific party theatre has been called one of the “culture party hybrids taking Washington by storm” by the Washington Post. According to the Financial Times, “The Picnic Theatre Company’s bipartisan players…spend their days running the country and their evenings running the show.” Washington professionals, journalists and diplomats by day the all-volunteer Picnic Theatre players donate proceeds of performances to historical preservation of museums, and arts and education charitieswww.facebook.com/PicnicTheatreProceeds from tonight’s event are donated to Tudor Place.
